What good is knowledge, if it's not passed on without loss? And what good is information, if it's not used for transformation?
A Christmas Celebration was organised at Snehatheeram Rehabilitation Centre for People Living with HIV AIDS. As a part of this, a Health Awareness Programme cum Free Medical check-up was conducted by the SMIMS team. There were lots of singing, dancing and playing of games. Christmas cakes were distributed and we had lunch together in the afternoon. A group from YWCA, Trivandrum also attended. See more photos on the SMIMS website.
This year it is planned to commemorate World AIDS Day at SMIMS in a different manner. Previous years it was either public meets or seminars. This year we are bringing in over 200 People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) from different parts of Kanyakumari District and giving them Free Medical Examination, Medicines and Lunch. This programme is being organised in collaboration with an NGO – Snehatheeram – that works in the field of Rehabilitation of PLHAs.
We also plan to address on of the major problems faced by PLHAs – that of Stigma and Discrimination – by conducting an awareness programme for the general public. It is because of the lack of awareness that people with HIV gets discriminated against and the scale of this is so huge that this is being referred to as the second pandemic. This issue can be addressed only by taking concrete measures to make people aware why HIV is not to be dreaded in normal social life.

The re-designed website of the Association for the Prevention and Control of Rabies in India (APCRI) was launched by Dr. Francois-Xavier Meslin, Team Leader, Neglected Zoonotic Diseases, WHO, Geneva, on 18-11-2009, at a grand function held at Hotel SP Grand Days, Trivandrum. It is a CMS Website with facility for Browser and Desktop Client based Content Management, Advanced Custom Graphics with Animated Visual Effects, Advanced Search Engine Optimization, Online Discussion Forum, Photo and Video Galleries and Social Networking Integration. World Health Day was commemorated on the 7th of April at SMIMS, the institution I work at.
This years theme for World Health Day is: Save Lives – Make Hospitals Safe During Emergencies.
We organized a poster exhibition at the hospital. Medical, Dental, Nursing and other Paramedical Students prepared and exhibited posters.
The Students had a wonderful time exhibiting their posters. A total of 66 posters were there.
A group of 6th semester Medical students led by Anu Ann Zachariah won the first prize for the world health day poster designing competition.
There was also a free medical examination camp at the rural health center, which was also very successful.
My passion is exploring better methods of communication in the field of Medicine. I do this by trying out innovative educational tools, creating medical videos and animations and by developing high quality medical websites. I also teach Medicine in India.
